What is the procedure?
Nucleoplasty uses a needle-based device introduced into the disc under imaging guidance. Depending on the technique, radiofrequency or plasma energy is used to remove or modify a small amount of nucleus material, aiming to reduce intradiscal pressure.
Who may be a candidate?
It may be considered when symptoms and MRI findings correlate, conservative care has not provided sufficient relief, and the herniation is contained. It is not suitable for every disc herniation, especially when there is a large free fragment or significant neurological deficit.
Limitations and risks
Benefits are not guaranteed. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, nerve injury, persistent pain or the need for subsequent surgery.
Clinical assessment
Appropriate treatment depends on your symptoms, neurological examination, MRI findings and personal medical history. A consultation is needed before making a treatment decision.
